Small threadlike organs on the surface of
some cells, composed of contractile fibres
that produce rhythmic waving movements. Some
single-celled organisms move by means of
cilia. In multicellular animals, they keep
lubricated surfaces clear of debris. They
also move food in the digestive tracts of
some invertebrates.
